2/1 – OPENER'S POSSIBLE REBIDS after 1nt force

by Paul Thurston

After the auction goes

Opener North Responder South
1 or 1♠ Pass 1NT Pass
?

the following is a list of opener's possible responses, with requirements:

  1. Two of his own suit = 6+cards, minimum hand, 12-15 HCP.

  2. Three of his own suit = 6+cards, good suit usually unbalanced, medium hand (16-18 HCP, game invitational); ex. ♠AQJxxx A KQx ♣xxx

  3. Four of his own suit = self sufficient suit (6+ cards, usually 7+), wants to be in game opposite minimum but thinks slam is doubtful; usually about 7 ˝ to 8 ˝ winners; ex. ♠KQJxxxx x KQX ♣Ax

  4. 2NT = 18-19 HCP, balanced, almost forcing to game but responder can “get out” if he’s responded on a real dog.

  5. 3NT = semi-balanced “source of tricks” type hand with a good 6-card major, stoppers in sidesuits and usually about 17-19 HCP;
    ex. ♠AKJxxx Kx Ax ♣QJx

  6. Jump Shift – as in “old” stanadard = good 18+ HCP, forcing to game, showing second suit.

    ♠AKJ10x KQJxx Ax ♣x, after 1S-1NT, rebid 3
    ♠AKQ10x Axx KQJx ♣x after 1S-1NT, rebid 3

  7. A 1 opener may reverse to 2S with a 4-card suit and 16+ HCP;
    ex. ♠AQJx AKxxx Kxx ♣x; after 1-1NT, rebid 2S.

  8. A simple (not a jump, not a reverse) rebid of a new suit will usually show 4+ cards, 12-17 HCP, and is not forcing.

  9. Very often, opener’s hand will fit none of the above but he still MUST REBID! In these not uncommon circumstances, opener must make a forced rebid of convenience in his lower 3-card minor.
    ex. ♠Axxxx KQx xx ♣Axx after 1S-1NT, rebid 2♣;
    ♠KJxxx Ax Axx ♣ xxx after 1S-1NT, rebid 2♣.

    In one (very) rare circumstance this “rebid of convenience” might even be made in a 2-card minor:
    ♠Axxx KJxxx xx ♣Ax, after 1-1NT, rebid 2♣
